The Dynamics of Architectural Form by Rudolf Arnheim (University of California Press, 1977) is a classic in understanding the sensory appearance of architecture.  The text is based on the Mary Duke Biddle 1975 lectures at the Cooper Union.

The sensory appearances of our man-made-environment influences our way of life and our conduct of social affairs quite directly. But the power of the purely visual effects exerted by architecture, in our own time and in the past, has been largely in recent discussion, with its focus on practical utility and other economic and social factors (…) The sheer size of buildings (which surround their perceivers as well s confront them at a distance), the interaction between immobile structures and mobile humans, the complex correspondences between inside and outside, occupied and open spaces, the variable relations between horizontal expanse and vertical ascent – all have unexpected perceptual consequences, which Arnheim explores with his customary clarity and precision.
– Rudolf Arnheim, The Dynamics of Architectural Form (University of California Press, 1977), excerpt from the book description

The text is in English. The book is illustrated with some black-and-white photographs and drawings.
